This is exactly what they are doing this week in Bogor, Indonesia and in Quito, Ecuador, as part of TSF's partnerships with the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team (UNDAC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Quito, Ecuador: Introductory Course for New UNDAC Members
31 staff and volunteers from organisations and NGOs such as Map Action, the White Helmets and America Support Team coming from all over Latin America are taking part in this introductory course organised by UNDAC.
Thanks to its expertise in applying of ICT applied to emergency response, TSF is regularly asked to participate during these training sessions. Our ICT experts show UNDAC members how to technically and financially optimise the latest telecommunications technologies and how to adapt them to the contingencies of the field so that they best meet humanitarian needs. Afterwards, they proceed to a simulation exercise where they teach them how to set up and use satellite connections.
"The main goal is that the participants become empowered so that in a crisis situation, they are able to assess the needs and communicate essential information as quickly as possible," says Armando Samayoa, one of our trainers and TSF representative in Latin America & the Caribbean.
Bogor, Indonesia: Refresher course on the importance of emergency telecoms for AHA Center staff members
One of the role of TSF, as an ASEAN partner, is to regularly provides training to the Emergency Response and Evaluation Teams (ERAT) of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre).
This time, the training is a "refresher" for AHA staff only. They already know how to use satellite equipment, but TSF is here to reinforce for them the importance of emergency telecoms and to support them in the deployment of their ICT equipment during the 2 days of SIMEX.
At the end of this training, AHA staff will have had the opportunity to review the basics of a telecom deployment and have been able to practice their skills during a 2-day simulation exercise.
