Following the passage of devastating Cyclone Kenneth in Mozambique, the second storm to hit the country this year, the TSF teams spent more than two weeks supporting humanitarian organisations, international and national institutions in the province of Cabo Delgado. Before its disengagement, TSF has led a capacity building workshop with the teams of the National Disasters Management Institute (INGC).
The aim was to provide INGC staff with the necessary know-how on establishing communications at the heart of a crisis zone focusing on installing, configuring and activating satellite connections.
During the emergency, TSF has also been working with INGC providing them with satellite equipment and connections. INGC Deputy Director, Casimir dos Santos Teresa Abreu, recognised that TSF’s “assistance was extremely valuable for our communication system in the affected areas, especially the Internet services.”
Since arriving on April 27th in the north of Mozambique, following Cyclone Kenneth, TSF not only supported INGC, but also the teams of UNOCHA and WFP. Gemma Connell, Head of OCHA Regional Office for Southern & Eastern Africa was very grateful for “the support that the TSF team has provided to the humanitarian community throughout this response, particularly in the early days of our presence here in Pemba - we would not have been online without you!”
After two months of intense work, covering both Cyclone Idai and Kenneth, our teams are about to leave Mozambique; a country never hit by two storms of such intensity hit in the same season, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). TSF will remain in contact with the organisations supported on the ground to ensure continuity in the assistance provided.
