Empowering people on the move with Information Diffusion

15 Oct 2017  -  Ongoing
Key figures
  • 26 centres for people on the move equipped
  • More than 13,000 migrant beneficiaries reached per month
  • 51% of the people reported making important decisions after watching the information

TSF developed an information diffusion system for the protection of migrants in transit and asylum seekers in Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia.
Context

In recent years, the migration situation in Latin America has been marked by restrictions and changes in migration policies, creating new difficulties for people fleeing violence and crises in their countries on an already extremely dangerous route.

Some policies slow down and limit asylum application processes and create a climate of fear and vulnerability among migrants, pushing them towards more dangerous routes, often resulting in abuse and death.

As migrants seek to find their bearings, they risk coming across erroneous or misleading information that can put them at risk.

Our action

Since 2017, TSF aims to contribute to the safety and empowerment of migrants and asylum seekers by sharing reliable information. In collaboration with shelters and organizations in Mexico, Guatemala and Columbia, TSF supports their ability to make informed decisions by sharing essential, reliable and timely information on:

  • their rights and duties,
  • legal and administrative procedures,
  • health and mental health,
  • education related content,
  • the institutions providing support along the route.

This Information Diffusion project is implemented in 26 strategically identified care centers across the migration route, with 13,153 estimated users per month in 2025. The information is provided by international and national organizations involved in the management of migration crises, and is regularly updated, adapted to the needs of migrants, and taking into account the experiences of minorities. 98% of people said they felt safer after accessing the information, and 97% reported an improvement in their emotional well-being.

Information diffusion system

Environmental factors such as location and context are a central element for an appropriated response to the needs of exposed populations. TSF has developed a connected information diffusion solution designed around three criteria:

  • universality (compatibility with conventional TV screens regardless of the country of implementation);
  • low bandwidth consumption (which can be optimised for satellite, 2G, 3G);
  • deployable on a large scale (through a unified online information management platform).

The solution consists of a network of micro-computers connected through the internet to a central server. The information is transmitted to the devices in real time. Each device is connected to an information screen strategically located in each centre in congruence with the assistance process of the partner institution.
